Stumptown Coffee Roasters is a coffee roaster and retailer based in Portland, Oregon, USA. The chain's flagship café and bakery opened in 1999. Since then, three other coffee shops, a roastery, and a boutique have opened in Portland, as well as in Seattle, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New Orleans. Stumptown is owned by Peet's Coffee, which in turn is owned by JAB Holding Company. The company was an early innovator in nitrogen-containing canned cold brew coffee and continues to innovate in cold brew products.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters Business model

Founders Duane Sorenson and Stumptown Coffee Roasters are considered part of the third-wave coffee movement.

Sorensen and his colleagues visited coffee farms in person, and they reportedly paid premium prices for the beans, sometimes three to four times the fair trade price. He once set a record for the highest price of coffee beans.

Sorenson also offers atypical benefits to its employees, such as B. paying for compilations produced by their various bands and hiring a full-time massage therapist. Stumptown has won numerous awards, including the 2006 Roaster of the Year.

In 2015, Stumptown Coffee Roasters was acquired by Peet's Coffee for an undisclosed sum.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters Locations

Stumptown operates five coffee shops in Portland. They are located at SE 45th & Division St., SE 34th & Belmont, Downtown SW 3rd & Ash St., Ace Hotel at 1022 SW Stark Street, and Portland International Airport. The company also has a bakery and retail store at its headquarters at 100 SE Salmon St. The original SE branch location was formerly a hair salon called "The Hair Bender," which used the name Stumptown for one of its signature espresso blends.

In November 2007, Stumptown opened two cafes in Seattle. In September 2009, the company also opened a café at the Ace Hotel in New York. In May 2010, a temporary "pop-up" location appeared in Amsterdam's De Pijp district. Opened by Sorensen, who claimed it was never permanent, it closed its doors the same year.

In 2013, Stumptown opened a second coffee shop in New York City and a coffee shop/roastery in Los Angeles. In January 2014, the company began selling pre-milk coffee in grocery stores. Other cafes are also opening in Chicago and New Orleans. Stumptown opened its third New York City cafe in the summer of 2018 at the historic Brooklyn Firehouse.

We believe that the roasting process should be transparent and that it’s our responsibility to honor the hard work already invested in the coffee by roasting it to showcase its distinctive qualities. Every roast cycle is like the arc of development in the belly of the roaster—each minute or experience is inextricably tied to the minute or experience before and after it. Our roasting team brings 121 collective years of roasting experience to work with them each day. It’s that depth of knowledge that allows them to welcome our longtime offerings back to the menu like greeting an old friend—warmly, with familiarity and a practiced eye for the nuanced ways the coffee may have changed from its last visit. Roasting is one of the most delicate and critical parts of the chain of events leading to a good cup of coffee. We attempt to highlight what makes that particular variety or farm exciting, rather than imparting our own fingerprint. We're here to bring out the best in the coffee, and if we do our job correctly, no one should even be thinking about the roast when they drink it.

Since our beginnings, Stumptown has searched the world for the best coffee out there. That coffee grows in mountainous regions of the tropics—farms perched at high elevations with warm days, cool nights, and distinct rainy and dry seasons. Microclimates, soil composition, coffee cultivars, and post-harvest processing methods can each contribute distinct dimensions to the cup.

Our coffee team spends about half the year in producing countries, meeting directly with our producer partners on their farms, at their mills, and in their cupping labs.

The effort is worth it. We’re not doing it the easy way by buying bulk, mid-quality beans anonymously from a trading house. Instead, we go right to the source of the best coffee—that farm atop a hill in Ethiopia, for example. We hike through fields, stand among coffee-drying decks, and sit down to share a meal and talk about the crop with producers we’ve met many times.

We routinely pay producers well in excess of what they could receive on the commodity market, but we understand that our coffee demands more work—hand-picking each cherry at ideal ripeness and processing it with great attention to detail.
