Espresso can be expensive in Denmark's capital, Copenhagen, but there may be a good reason that you don't necessarily pay just for the coffee.

The Italian invigorator of a coffee drink, espresso, costs four euros in Copenhagen, equivalent to 30 kroner. This is significantly more than in Oslo, where the price is DKK 19, while the price in Stockholm is DKK 20.

This is written by DR, which refers to the German travel magazine Travelbook.de, which has tried to create an espresso index, where the magazine has compared the espresso prices at restaurants and cafes in 42 European capitals. Here, Copenhagen is at the very top of the list.

Travelbook.de has compared the prices of over 400 cafes, restaurants, and coffee shops. The requirement has been that the location should be centrally located or in tourist areas, while the average price in each country is assessed based on at least six menus that can be found online.

While the Consumer Council Tænk calls it conspicuous, Klaus Thomsen, co-founder of the Copenhagen roastery Coffee Collective, which has seven coffee bars, explains to DR that in Copenhagen you pay most of all for the social.

"One of the big expenses for us is just as much buying a place to sit, meeting a friend, where you can sit and talk or work. It is a large part of the price,' says Klaus Thomsen.
