Discovered by a goat

An Ethiopian shepherd is said to have discovered the power of the coffee plant in the 9th century when his goats ate it and then suddenly behaved very energetically. He thought this was so special that he decided to snack on it himself and… the rest is history.

Huh, coffee or wine?

The word “coffee” is taken from the Arabic word “qahwah” which first meant wine. Subsequently, the Turkish word for coffee, “kahve” was derived from this word and became related to the word “café”.

Coffee as fuel

Did you know that the remains of coffee can be used for biofuel for cars? Although your car probably won't run on coffee in the next few years, there are already buses in London that run on a combination of diesel and oil extracted from coffee grounds.

The most expensive coffee in the world

The most expensive coffee in the world, Kopi Luwak, has a remarkable production process. The feline animal “luwak” eats the coffee berries, but the seeds do not digest. So these are thrown out. The coffee is made from these pooped seeds. The process in the intestinal tract gives the coffee a unique taste, but the production process is not 100% animal-friendly.

Banned three times

There's nothing more harmless than a delicious cup of coffee, you might think. Yet our favorite drink has been declared illegal no less than three times! The first time was in Mecca in the 16th century. This ban was lifted after no less than 30(!) years of debate between scientists and lawyers. The second time, Charles II closed coffeehouses in Europe to quell the rebellion of the moment. Finally, Frederick the Great made another attempt in Germany to ban coffee because he was concerned about the economic impact of the money leaving his country to buy coffee elsewhere.
