Linea is the most recent project from esteemed coffee roaster Andrew Barnett (formerly of Ecco Caffè and Intelligentsia). Its first location opened in 2013 on 18th Street, just steps from Mission Street. The boutique roaster focuses on exceptional, sweetness-forward coffees and has been named one of Food & Wine Magazine’s Best 11 Indie Coffee Shops in America, San Francisco Magazine’s Best Espresso and a Thrillist Best New Coffee Roaster. “It’s always been my dream to roast coffee in San Francisco, and to have a place where we could create an experience where our guests can see and smell beautiful coffees being roasted, and appreciate the finished product all at the same time,” says Barnett. To bring his vision to life in Potrero Hill is especially meaningful. “I love the area,” says Barnett, a former resident of the neighborhood. “I’m excited to serve the people of Potrero Hill.  It’s a vibrant mix of young urban artists and professionals, alongside folks who’ve nurtured this unique community for many years.”

Our roastery

Linea’s new Mariposa Street location features a café with indoor seating for up to 60 as well as additional sidewalk seating, and allows expansion of the company’s roasting operations, currently housed in Oakland, to San Francisco. 

The artisan roaster’s location occupies a dream roasting space most recently operated by Intelligentsia Coffee, and comes already outfitted with a vintage German Probat UG-22 coffee roaster. The facility—used formerly as a private coffee lab—will retain its use as an educational space for wholesale customers and coffee enthusiasts, but will be updated to provide a public space for café patrons and retail sales, and will include new additions such as a barista-ergonomic La Marzocco KB-90 espresso machine.

Linea launched with a simple mission, to bring joy, and to source, roast and serve the world’s finest coffees.  Now, as global warming and the climate crisis intensifies, Linea has joined the international movement to save our home planet, before it’s too late. From its inception, Linea has partnered with the the world’s most progressive organic coffee farmers, environmentally friendly producers and importers, but we recognize that this is not enough and that every aspect of our business from running our equipment to shipping our beans needs reworking, so that we’re doing more good and less harm.  We are taking action to protect our sweet earth.
