Rwanda has one of the most interesting coffee histories in East Africa. It is a place where the production of high quality coffee is closely linked to the developmental spirit of a population after the tragic civil war of the 1990s. Known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, many of its coffees are grown on farms at high altitude - between 1700 and 2000 meters above sea level (MASL).
Rwandan coffee can be world-class in terms of quality. It often has special flavors that rival the best coffee in Central America and a greater balance than coffee in Kenya.
