DOMA Coffee

Our Story

11,411. The joke around our house is that number represents how many cups of coffee I’ve made for my wife over the last thirty years. In retrospect, it doesn’t seem like that many. The French Press was my gateway. It leads to Chemex and ceramic drippers. At some point, I added better grinders. There was a commercial espresso machine and grinder in the kitchen, then a Technivorm brewer. In 1997, my wife Rebecca and I were laying the groundwork for DOMA Coffee; we just didn’t know it at the time. We have known from the start, however, that what we do matters.

DOMA is named after our two sons, Dominic and Marco. Our logo with ‘The Man’ is a picture of my father at the beach in Coeur d’Alene in the 1940s with the Playland Pier in the background.   Along with community and family values, roasting at DOMA combines science and craft.

In short, we’re passionate about coffee — and we’ve built a life around this passion. One thing that has remained constant for me from the start is the zen-like moment each time I make coffee in the morning: pouring the beans into the hand grinder, standing outside to grind so as not to wake anyone, filling the water kettle, and then carefully setting everything up while waiting for the water to boil. The motion, the sounds, and smells — really, the whole process — continue to captivate me to this day. With any luck, I’ll be able to almost double that number I mentioned at the start.   Our dedication to the craft and our commitment to sustainability connect DOMA to our customers. That dedication and passion will allow us to continue roasting quality coffees for generations to come.

DOMA Coffee

Coffee

It’s simple, right? We’re all about coffee. But coffee is complicated (and, if we’re being honest, so are we). Long story short, we don’t shy away from the endless learning, the tough decisions, and the complexities of our industry—it’s what it takes to roast and craft an amazing cup of coffee. We create what we want to drink: high-quality, ethical, small-batch coffee that tastes awesome.

Culture

Life without people is pretty boring. We found coffee to be a great way to connect. We use DOMA to expand, create, play, challenge, nurture, and change our community and world culture. We followed our passion for coffee and picked up a few new passions along the way. Cycling, gardening, art, bread, and travel are a few.

Meaning

We try our best to use our business for good and not for evil. We’ve followed that motto for 20 years and we’ve done some pretty cool things for our community and environment. We love people, we love the planet, and we love coffee.

Brew Coffee

The motion, the sounds, and smells — really, the whole process is a zen-like experience we want you to enjoy as much as we do. Brewing and drinking coffee is fun if you have the right stuff. We’re happy to share what we’ve learned so you can enjoy our coffee the way we do.

Do Good In The World

When you drink DOMA, your support tracks back to the coffee farmer and forward to doing good for environmental causes, women’s programs, cyclists, and more. Learn more about our community partners. They’re pretty cool.
