CONGO MAPENDO / DR CONGO - FTO

Spyhouse is proud to release its first-ever coffee from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mapendo, Swahili for “love,” is produced on 16 distinct lots by over 4,200 farmers. Almost 40% of these farmers are women—many of whom have been widowed due to the conflicts that have destabilized the territory of Kalehe in the province of South Kivu amongst others in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These women consider gender justice and equality essential. They have worked with organizations such as OXFAM (an organization that provides aid for impoverished and war-torn regions across the globe) to enact Gender Action Learning Systems. This work has had an immensely positive impact and has enhanced the lives of many women in the region—and a great many women coffee producers.
