Swedish coffee with egg recipe

From panoramic fjords to the world's best saunas and wild, cold-water salmon, the Nordic region of Northern Europe is a must-visit once in a lifetime. But apart from a real trip, you can still get a taste of the local customs by making and drinking a typical Swedish coffee recipe; coffee with egg. This variant of coffee is also known as Swedish coffee or Hungarian coffee.

Swedish coffee with egg is straightforward to make. The result is a non-bitter, surprisingly light and incredibly smooth cup that combines the excellent taste of your favourite roast with a sort of toasted cheese aftertaste (it may sound strange, but it is) worth trying).

To make this strange and delicious mixture, you will need:

  • 1 fresh egg
  • 1 to 1 ½ tablespoon of your favourite coffee, coarsely ground (similar to what you would use for a French press )
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup ice cold water (yes, that's a total of 2 cups water)
  • Sugar and milk to taste
  • Pot

All this together makes one serving of coffee, multiplied by the number of cups you want to make.

Preparation method

1. Boil the water

Start by boiling the first cup of water (not the ice-cold one) in a pot.

2. Break the egg and stir

Whip the egg open in a cup (including the shell) while the water is boiling and stir slightly.

3. Add the ground coffee

Put the ground coffee in the cup with the egg and stir again.

4. Add the coffee-egg mixture to the boiling water

Once you have mixed the coffee and egg well, add them to the boiling water.

5. Cook for five minutes

Let the mixture boil for 5 minutes, careful not to overflow (because it will).

6. Remove from heat and add cold water

After boiling, remove the mixture from the heat and add the cup of ice-cold water. The egg and coffee residues will sink to the bottom of the pot so that you can quickly drain the coffee and leave most of the residue in the pot.

7. Filter and serve

Pour the liquid through a fine sieve or use a French press to ensure you only get coffee.

And that's another new and exciting way to enjoy the best drink in the world. Sit back, enjoy and go on a trip to Sweden once in your life; it's worth it.
