The perfect cool down on summer days is an iced coffee. But how do you make it at home with your coffee machine? That's a cool trick. We explain and share three delicious iced coffee recipes to make right away.

What is an iced coffee?

An iced coffee is a cold coffee drink based on an espresso, filter coffee or instant coffee – which you drink with or without cold milk. To make it extra cool, add ice cubes or crushed ice. You also have variants with condensed milk, ice cream, coffee syrup and whipped cream.

What kind of device do you need?

Most iced coffees require a shot of espresso. A fully automatic espresso machine or a semi-automatic espresso machine is therefore the best choice. Do you have a Senseo? Then choose espresso coffee pods. If you have a Dolce Gusto machine in the kitchen, the espresso and ristretto cups from Gran Maestro Italiano are perfect as a base for an iced coffee. You also have many different types of espresso and ristretto capsules that are compatible with a Nespresso machine.

You can also make a strong coffee with a perculator. Make iced coffee without an espresso machine? That is also possible! Then go for instant coffee.

Difference iced coffee and cold brew

An iced coffee is not the same as a cold brew. With a cold brew, ground coffee is mixed with cold water instead of hot water. Then let it steep for 12 – 24 hours in a closed container. Then you filter the coffee water mixture. The French Press is often used for this.

Tip: Fancy a cold brew, but no time to let those hours steep? Try Dolce Gusto's cold brew coffee. Also suitable to prepare with (vegetable) milk.

Recipe: classic iced coffee with milk

Do you often drink cappuccino or latte macchiato? Then a cold version with milk is recommended.

What do you need?

  • For a 250 ml glass
  • 1 shot of espresso at 30 ml
  • 100 – 150 ml milk, coconut, oat, almond or soy milk
  • ice cubes
  • Optional: sugar, honey or a coffee syrup

How to make it?

Make an espresso. Let it cool down or immediately pour the hot espresso into the glass on top of the ice cubes. By stirring vigorously, your coffee cools down quickly. Then add the milk. Do you want a sweet version? Then add a little sugar, honey or coffee syrup.

Tip: you can also replace the (vegetable) milk with condensed milk for a sweet variant.
