Macchiato

What is a macchiato coffee?
A macchiato is also known as an espresso macchiato or a caffè macchiato. The macchiato is an espresso coffee drink, topped with a small amount of milk foam. In Italian, the term “macchiato” translates as “marked” or “stained”, meaning that the espresso is stained or marked by the milk foam on top.
Types of macchiato
There are two main types of macchiato coffee: the espresso macchiato or caffè macchiato and the latte macchiato.

How to make an espresso macchiato or macchiato coffee?

  • To make an espresso macchiato, you need to use good quality coffee beans and brew a shot of espresso into your cup.
  • Heat the milk before frothing or steam the milk with the espresso machine at about 65°C (150°F): that is where the milk is hot enough, but not yet simmering
  • Froth the milk using a milk frother or with any other method like, french press or whisk to froth the milk. It should be a dry foam which is light and fluffy.
  • Then you add a thin, frothy layer of milk to the top of your drink, pouring slowly to not let them mix, or you can use a spoon to remove the top of the dry foam only and place it on the top of the espresso. It will float right on top, so will not be incorporated into the espresso like in a latte.

The espresso macchiato has a high ratio of espresso to milk, and the addition of milk is meant to be complementary, so the espresso can still be very much tasted. Usually the espresso macchiato is served in a short glass.

What is a latte macchiato?
The latte macchiato is a sweeter, layered espresso beverage. It is made by adding a shot or half a shot of espresso to steamed milk, topped with a milk foam layer. This will have a very pleasant flavor experience, and you'll notice a beautiful transition from milk foam to milky espresso to steamed milk. Usually a latte macchiato is served in a tall transparent glass

What is the difference between a latte macchiato and a coffee latte?
The difference between a latte macchiato and a coffee latte is that in the latte the espresso is added first followed by steamed milk and a final layer of frothed milk, while in a latte macchiato the espresso is added last, so it is made in reverse. So this means that after the milk is steamed and foamed then gently pour the espresso into your cup or glass. So, a latte macchiato is a layered coffee drink, while in the coffee latte the ingredients are mixed. They are both milk-heavy and usually have the same size.
