Coffee takes a long time to reach your cup, and the final step is to match the right cup to the inherent flavors of your roast. Follow the steps below to enjoy the most intense flavors and an amplified coffee tasting experience.
Selection. Sommeliers choose premium coffees with complex flavors. These are usually light and medium roasts, baked within the past two weeks.
Brew. Grind and brew using your favorite method immediately before tasting.
Look. Observe the clarity of the coffee. Pour a little into your glass and let it cool for the flavors to emerge. What does it look like? Finish your pour, leaving the glass about 1/3 empty.
Smell. Absorb the aroma of your brew. Get close to your coffee and take 2-3 deep breaths. What scent do you smell? It's a learning process and you'll get better with practice.
Taste. Experience the coffee flavor. Be mindful of the present moment. Take a sip and watch your taste. Close your eyes and take another sip. Do you have a different taste? Look back at the bag to see if it says anything you've tasted.
Explore. Consciously observe, smell, and taste again halfway through the cup. Different aromas and flavors are released at different temperatures. Let it cool and taste the last bite.
