Caribou Coffee Background

Caribou Coffee Founder John Puckett decided to become an entrepreneur when he was working as a management consultant at Bain & Company in Boston, helping other companies develop ideas and strategies. After a trip to Denali National Park in Alaska, he and his wife Kim decided to raise money and start a coffee business. His wife stayed with General Motors to work while John moved to Minnesota to find his first location and raise money.

Caribou's original concept was to work five days a week, targeting downtown commuters, mimicking the way Boston works. Puckett signed the lease for the first site, which is located in the large Pillsbury Central office building. Soon after, however, the building's landlord decided not to sign the lease because another of the building's retail tenants had exclusive rights to sell coffee in the building and threatened to sue them. As a result, financing for the store failed because it was tied to that particular location. Puckett chose to start looking for available locations in the suburbs, and the first Caribou coffee shop opened in December 1992 in the Minneapolis suburb of Edina, Minnesota.
In 2003, Michael J. Coles was named CEO of Caribou Coffee.
On September 29, 2005, Caribou was listed on the Nasdaq under the CBOU. CEO Michael J. Coles recalled: “Two years after I took over, we opened 337 stores in 14 states and the District of Columbia. In less than three years, Caribou went from a negative sales growth company to Become a public company. Nasdaq”.
In 2006, Arcapita (formerly First Islamic Investment Bank) was the majority shareholder of Caribou Coffee. In 2002, Yusuf al-Qaradawi's involvement with the bank sparked protests against Caribou Coffee. That same year, al-Qaradawi resigned as chairman of the bank's Sharia committee.
As of 2009, Caribou employed more than 6,000 people.
In December 2012, the company was taken private by German equity firm JAB Holding for $340 million. After the merger, Caribou Coffee will allegedly continue to operate as an independent company with its own brand, management team, and growth strategy, and Caribou will continue to be headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

DO GOOD

Our aspiration at Caribou Coffee is to be the Community Place I Love. To help us achieve our aspiration, we created Do Good.
Do Good is one of six company strategies. In 2012, we began publishing our annual Do Good report as a means of providing our guests, consumers, team members, and suppliers with a scorecard of our progress, celebrating our accomplishments, hearing from friends that have helped us along the way, and outlining what we're trying to do differently.
We have worked hard to ensure our guests not only get the highest quality coffee but also the peace of mind that their coffee is sourced in an environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable manner. While coffee is our passion, Do Good also focuses on addressing recycling, water conservation, waste reduction, and energy efficiency in our coffeehouses. When it comes to our local and global communities, the report highlights our giving efforts including volunteering and monetary/product donations.
