Types of Iced Coffee

A cup of hot coffee is the perfect choice for cold winter days, but when it's 35 degrees outside, coffee not only doesn't look so appetizing, but it's not even recommended.

In any case, there are some coffee-based soft drinks that make any hot day seem more enjoyable.

They all come from the Mediterranean area and are relatives of the Greek frappé, accidentally invented 58 years ago in Thessaloniki. You have them all listed below:

  • Frappe - the most popular type of coffee in Greece

A little milk, sugar, a lot of ice and, of course, a shot of espresso, all gently shaken with a long, colorful straw. It is the perfect drink for a day at the beach, it energizes and at the same time cools.

Frappe was discovered in 1957 by Dimitrios Vakondios at the Thessaloniki International Fair, when he did not find hot water for his coffee and tried to prepare it in a shaker with ice-cold water.

Since then, frappe has become the most popular type of coffee among Greek tourists and young people. The name comes from the French, from the verb "frapper", which means to hit. But when it comes to drinks, fraper means to cool a liquid from an ice shaker.

Method of preparation:

Mix in the shaker (if you do not have a shaker use the mixer, it comes out very well) milk, sesame, sugar and ice. Pour the resulting mixture into a beaker (or a taller glass). Put ice cream and whipped cream on top, decorate with wafer roll and chocolate topping.

  • Cold Espresso - Italian alternative

Perfired Italian coffee, espresso, also comes in a summer version, with lots of ice and a little foam.

Luigi Bezzera is the inventor of the espresso machine and is a name highly respected by all coffee lovers. If the drink obtained by Luigi 114 years ago was extremely hot and concentrated, the Italians in the south felt the need to soften it a bit and adapt it to their needs and the climate in the region.

This is how Espresso Freddo appeared, which is served in a medium-sized glass, with a lot of ice (preferably crushed) and without sugar, in order to enjoy the aroma of coffee properly. You can also add a little sugar, if you find it too hard.

  • Cappuccino Freddo - a dessert that you drink with a straw

The version of cappuccino that we consume today, was created in the seventeenth century, when a Venetian monk tried to dilute Turkish coffee, adding milk and honey. The color of the mixture thus obtained was reminiscent of that of the Capuchin monks, from which it got its name.

The summer version of this drink, which is also the biggest rival of frappe, is a cappuccino mixed with crushed ice and milk foam, which sits on top of the coffee.

The foam must be exactly two fingers, and the amount of sugar must not be too high, so as not to become a calorie bomb. It's also not as strong as Greek frappe, so if you have a choice between the two and you feel a little sleepier, you know which is the right choice.

Method of preparation:

Put the milk in a glass and put it in the freezer for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, mix the coffee with the sugar, liqueur, vanilla essence and 2 ice cubes and mix with the blender.

The milk taken out of the freezer is also mixed separately for 2-3 minutes. Put the milk in a cup, add an ice cube, and then pour over the coffee.

It can be garnished with whipped cream, over which cocoa is sprinkled. You can also put a cinnamon stick.

  • Cold Greek coffee - banishes sleep and heat

Because it has a diuretic effect, coffee is not a recommended drink in summer. However, the Greeks love it so much that they looked for all sorts of methods to turn this drink into one that can be consumed even when the heat is outside.

Cold Greek coffee is exactly what the name says. The Greeks prepare their coffee in a kettle before bed, then leave it in the fridge overnight. In the morning, strain it and pour it into a glass full of ice.

As the ice melts, it further dilutes the concentration of the coffee and, at the same time, turns it into a slightly more moisturizing drink.

  • Freddoccino - a dessert coffee

Freddoccino is not really a coffee, it is more of a dessert that brings a lot with a milkshake.

Usually, the options you find now served in cafes or beach bars are made of instant powder. But the original version and which we recommend, is made from a dose of coffee, milk, sugar and chocolate. All these ingredients mix well in a blender with a lot of ice, and the result is a kind of milkshake.

Method of preparation:

In a bowl, mix all the ingredients except milk and ice, then put in a blender a glass full of ice (the same glass you will use when serving), then pour the milk and other ingredients. Stir for about 2 minutes until all the ice has crumbled but the composition remains thick.

Serve immediately, do not let it melt!

  • Frappe with coffee liqueur - for hedonists

Adding a drop (or more) of coffee liqueur or chocolate over a classic frappe is a perfect choice for those who want an effect not only refreshing, but also euphoric from the frappe they enjoy at the beach.

Remember, when making this version of frappe, there is no need to add sugar, because the liqueur is quite sweet.

  • Espresso with ice cream - the dessert that wakes up

We all deserve such pampering, especially when the heat outside has become unbearable and makes our eyelids heavier.

The preparation is quite simple: take a shot of espresso, pour it into a tall glass, then add 1 or 2 tablespoons of vanilla ice cream. Let the hot coffee melt the ice cream and stir.

The result is exceptional, delicious, refreshing, perfect for summer days.
