Benefits of Green Coffee

Green coffee starts to become more and more popular among coffee enthusiasts due to its healthy compounds. It has a quite different taste than regular coffee having a more herbal flavor. In this article, we are going to talk about some of the most important benefits of green coffee. So let's begin.

What green coffee actually is?

Green coffee is actually raw coffee beans that haven’t been roasted. Many proponents announced that green coffee extract offers a large number of health benefits. Its extract became very popular, due to its losing weight attributes and it is also well known for offering healthy blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

It is a very powerful antioxidant because it contains chlorogenic acid. This acid breaks down when the coffee is roasted. Some studies show that it stimulates the metabolism offering a better functionality of your body. Metabolism not only refers to digestion, but also indicates how well the cells in the body are working, including more important organs such as the lung, liver, heart, kidney, and brain as well. By being unroasted beans, green coffee retains beneficial compounds that may also provide some great anti-inflammatory effects. By knowing that, let’s see what other benefits green coffee provides.

High Blood Pressure

Based on a Japan study from 2006 140mg of green coffee extract per day for a period of 12 weeks reduces the systolic blood pressure almost at half for the ones who suffer from hypersensitivity.

Unfortunately, it is not indicated for every individual who suffers from high blood pressure, because for the one with caffeine sensitivity it might create the same symptoms as normal coffee does.

Great for Losing Weight

According to a couple of studies, green coffee offers great benefits to the ones who are trying to lose weight. Those studies succeed and take the conclusion that green coffee extract is way more effective for losing weight than a placebo. So if you are interested in losing some weight make sure to add green coffee extract to your diet, because it might work for you as well.

Reduces the Risk of Chronic Diseases

The chronic diseases risk can be reduced drastically due to the chlorogenic acids found in green coffee. There was another study that took 8 weeks on people with risk factors such as high blood sugar that increases the risk of diabetes. Each of the participants received  400mg of decaffeinated green coffee twice a day. At the end of those 8 weeks, there was a significant improvement in fasting blood sugar and they also lost some weight.

Possible side Effects

When it comes to the long-term safety offered by the green coffee extract, there is only little known. In general, green coffee extract and green coffee are considered to be safe for adults to use but taking it in excess might also cause you some side effects such as:

  • Nervousness
  • Nausea
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Increased heart rate
  • Headache
  • Insomnia
  • Stomach upset

Along with the short-term factors presented above, excessive consumption of green coffee in the long term might increase the risk of homocysteinemia, which is the amino acid that is connected to heart diseases.

Conclusion

As we saw above, there might be some great benefits offered by green coffee but unfortunately, there is not enough conclusive evidence to prove its true value, even if it has been promoted as a natural weight loss supplement, there need to be more studies made on it in order to fully conclude its benefits. But if you are a coffee lover who also likes to enjoy a more herbal coffee taste don’s shy away and enjoy a cup or two of this amazing raw coffee.
