HOW THE BUSINESS STARTED

On Friday, September 12, 1884, Arvid Nordquist opened the doors to the first store under his own name for the first time. It was on the corner of Nybrogatan and Riddargatan, and Arvid Nordquist had worked as an assistant in the store for several years before he could afford to buy it.

Old documents show that the rent for the premises was SEK 80 a month. The prices were humane: The coffee cost 70 öre per kilo, brown beans 15 öre and soap 18 öre while the butter cost as much as 95 öre per kilo.

Arvid Nordquist was a well-dressed man and his business idea was to market quality goods while he and the staff performed with quality. To further reinforce the impression, he made sure that the store was as neat as he was, and all the male shop assistants in Nordquist's store wore a dark suit and white shirt. In the store, customers could enjoy the aroma of pears and apples from Parisian trellis, elegantly packaged in cotton.

The general art and industry exhibition in 1897, popularly called the Stockholm exhibition, was a major event, and in connection with it, the store could be developed with new customers and new connections. Many famous people also appeared to shop here, among others the artist Anders Zorn and the poet Erik Axel Karlfeldt.

VISION

"We are the best partner - our customers feel inspired with us. We deliver strong brands with outstanding quality, service & value with people and the environment in mind."

SUSTAINABILITY WORK

All our coffee comes from sustainability-certified coffee growers, guaranteeing cultivation that takes account of people and the environment. The coffee beans are carefully chosen by our buyers to meet our quality standards. Our roastery is environmentally certified in accordance with ISO 14001, under which we constantly work to reduce our environmental impact, with external auditors verifying our work. We also offset the environmental impact that remains.

All this gives our coffee an even better aftertaste. We call this our People Planet Coffee manifesto.

100% CLIMATE COMPENSATED COFFEE

Coffee production generates emissions of carbon dioxide during cultivation, transport and roasting. At Arvid Nordquist Coffee, we work actively to reduce these emissions and our impact on the environment. We compensate for the carbon emissions we have not yet managed to tackle through tree-planting schemes in coffee-growing countries.

100% ARABICA BEANS

We use only the finest beans, with a rich and complex flavour, grown under the very best conditions. Our coffee always comprises 100% Arabica beans of the highest quality grades.

OUR INTERNAL ENVIRONMENTAL WORK

For us, sustainability means taking responsibility for the environment, the people and the economy of our own organization, as well as the whole of our value chain. We also work on gradually reducing our overall impact on people and the environment through clear targets all the way along the value chain, for example regarding production, transport, packaging materials and office environments. We then offset the impacts that remain through climate compensation schemes.

Really good coffee is more difficult to come by than most people think. Every little bean that ends up on the store shelves has been carefully selected by the purchasers at Arvid Nordquist, followed by careful roasting at our roasters in Solna.
